Stay-At-Home Mom Style: Dressed Up Tee

scarf, dress, belt, flats/ Target | tee/ Gap

You get two style posts in a row because today I'm linking up with Bri at Work Clothes, I Suppose for her Third Thursday Threads: Dressed Up Tees!

I guess you could say that tee shirts and I have an interesting past. All through high school and college, I was a jeans and tee kind of gal. So a plain tee made no sense to me. It was graphic tees all the way. Once I became a mom, I decided I should outgrow that phase and started wearing nicer shirts and blouses, and (mostly) left tee shirts behind entirely. But I still didn't see how a plain tee could benefit my wardrobe.

Until very recently. Since starting this blog, I found myself thinking occasionally that I could totally put together a certain outfit, if only I had a plain tee. I finally made the plunge in August and bought one black and one white, and have worn them frequently since then.

When Bri announced this month's theme, I knew I wanted to put together a date night outfit (the only time I really get "dressed up" any more). I had a vision of this black tee with my new striped dress, but the v neck of the tee and the boat neck of the dress created an... interesting neckline situation. To remedy that, I simply threw on a scarf to camouflage it and voila! A new date night outfit that I will keep in mind for the next time J and I are able to go out (which in all likelihood will be sometime in November, so I may have to add tights). I really like how this ended up coming together, and look forward to wearing it some time.

  1. good idea with the scarf! And I'm glad you spelled voila right! It's one of my biggest blogging pet peeves when someone is like "wah-la!" and I want to tell them that's not at all what they are trying to spell!

  2. Your scarf adds such a nice pop of color to the outfit! I love how you are wearing your dress as a skirt, way to put it to work! Wearing things different ways is the best!

  5. Are you describing me? haha, I totally lived in jeans and tees for the longest time, ranging from logo tees in high school to funny tees and band tees in college. A few years ago, I started wearing more plain colored tees (layered with a contrasting tank peeking underneath, of course, haha) but that was a look that I really strived to move away from when I decided I wanted to "dress better" and start the blog. I started to wear fancier blouses and button downs, and avoided plain tee-shirts. It wasn't until recently that I realized that the very thing I was avoiding (plain tees) was such a closet staple, and now I can't get enough of them! I just bought like 3 different colored tees at Old Navy :(

  6. I think this is adorable! I used to be similar to you - in high school and college, I wore graphic tees or solid colored tees ALL THE TIME (like Kimmie, usually with a contrasting tank underneath). Then I got to this phase where I though tees were super boring, so I literally had like one white tee, just to wear under a sweatshirt or something. Now, I'm realizing the versatility of a plain or slightly embellished tee, and I'm enjoying adding them slowly to my closet. I love how they can be so casual OR dressed up...and they have such a nice freshness that I really like.

  7. Thanks, Brynn! It's funny how we've all sort of come full circle when it comes to tees. :)
