Stay-At-Home Mom Style: Why I Don't Need the Things I Want

The upside, of course, to following style bloggers is lots and lots (and lots) of inspiration. The downside, however, (because there's always a downside) is wanting things that other girls pull off so well, and are super cute, even though they are not practical for my lifestyle. So I wrote this post for myself to remind me of what Stay-At-Home Mom Style truly means for me. To remind myself why those items, while perfectly reasonable in other girls' wardrobes (even other stay-at-home moms!), do not belong in mine.

 1. Wedges

You are a SAHM, which means spending most of your days inside with your kid, either chasing her around or keeping up with household duties. You are always barefoot when inside. And when you do go out of the house, it's either to run errands (while still chasing her around) or to the park (c'mon, all you do there is chase her around). You are a klutz and would roll your ankle at the store. And it would kill you not to be able to play tag or hide and seek or pirates or princesses on the playground with her simply because you wore impractical shoes just for the sake of wearing them. So stick with flats and be happy to occasionally wear heels on date nights. You do not need wedges.

2. Fedora

Yes, these are adorable. But see point 1 about being inside most of the time. You were raised not to wear hats indoors. So the only time you would wear one is to the playground, and you know how windy it is here. Even if it weren't windy, you would be constantly checking to make sure it's still on your head while going down slides or swinging with her. It would only be a distraction. You do not need a fedora.

 3. White Pants or Shorts

You spilled mustard on your jeans at lunch today. You barely thought anything of it, but if they had been white jeans, you would have felt the need to immediately go home, soak them, and change. You frequently allow your kid to use your jeans as a napkin. (You even do it yourself sometimes.) Yes, white is a great way to make an outfit look fresh and summery, but you would spend the entire time avoiding any- and everything that could get them dirty. You don't need the extra stress of trying to remain stain-free on top of everything else. You do not need white pants, or even shorts.

Obviously, these items are great wardrobe additions (even staples) for some girls. I can see the advantages of each one in the terms of having a well-rounded and fun wardrobe. And if these things make you feel happy and confident, rock on. But they are impractical for me, and wearing them would be annoying as opposed to empowering (no matter how good I looked). And the point of Stay-At-Home Mom Style is to look cute while not having to worry about the clothes themselves getting in the way of life.

What would you add to this list? Is there anything you like, but know it wouldn't fit with your lifestyle?

  1. I say yes to wedges! I agree about sandals at the park but I feel so much better when I'm wearing wedges :)

  2. I just need to find a pair that I don't feel like a weeble in (except that I would fall down). For some reason I find wedges harder to walk in than heels. If I find the perfect wedges, then I'll probably still buy them. :)

  3. AHH man wedges are seriously the best! I wear them to work all the time because they are not as painful as a full day in heels. I also love wearing the flat-er wedges on the weekends for running errands and stuff! Perhaps there is a pair out there that might work for running errands for you!

  4. I hope so! I haven't given up on them completely, I just haven't found that perfect pair yet. Until then, I love my flats. :)

  5. Great post! I was actually thinking how much I wanted black lace shorts (and for only $6 on ebay) but then I realized I had no where to wear them. So they were deleted from my watch list. I'm still mourning, but I think I will get over them. ;)

  6. $6 is a great deal, but if you never wear them, the cost per wear isn't worth it. Black lace shorts would be so pretty! But I don't know when I'd ever wear them, either. Good call. :)

  7. I love, love, love this post! Wedges are so cute (and would make me taller!), but totally not practical for my life! I would also love a pair of white jeans, but yeah, not gonna happen! I do have a couple pair of white shorts, and that has been fine, but there's a lot less fabric to worry about! I also don't buy many short dress or skirts, they just don't work for crawling around playing on the floor or climbing the playground!

  8. I just bought a pair of white shorts that the base color is white, but they have a floral kind of print on them so I'm not as worried about getting them dirty. That's about as close as I'll get, though! As for skirts, I stick with knee length to maxi length, because who wants to flash everybody at the playground? Haha

  10. Maybe one day I'll find a pair that aren't impractical, but until then, I don't want to buy them then never wear them!

  11. Seriously. Love. This. List. I'm not a SAHM, but I see the practicality in your explanations. I also loved the peaks into your life.

  12. I must be an exception - I wear white AND wedges! I had to give up heels as a SAHM, but quality wedges 3.5 inches or less work well for me (don't wear them to the park though). Look for a wider base on the sole. As for white, stains happen, but peroxide gets everything out - and I usually save them for out of the house stuff. I probably overdress for a SAHM, but it is what it is! ;)

  13. Hey, I totally respect that! It's awesome that you wear those things. And there's nothing wrong with overdressing for a SAHM, it's all about feeling good about yourself, which I know is something many SAHMs struggle with. Do you have any brand suggestions for wedges with wider soles? I think that really would solve my problem. I'm still iffy on white, but hey, I was also iffy on colored denim and now I own a pair! I just need to find the items that really work for me.
